Make dinner special tonight… serve by candlelight! Savor your meal while enjoying your favorite music. Even if you’re dining alone, make it elegant. Set the table with your good dishes. Turn off the television. Don’t answer the phone. Take the time to enjoy your dinner instead of rushing. Relax, unwind and enjoy the end of your day.

Fitness
Be flexible with your training. We always recommend you plan your workouts, but be prepared to change your workouts to accommodate personal circumstances such as illness, mood or soreness. Your workout will be much more productive if you accommodate your physical and mental state."

Peanut butter is an American tradition. Peanut butter provides vitamins, minerals, protein and carbohydrates. Two tablespoons of smooth peanut butter can provide 8 grams of protein, magnesium and phosphorus. It may be higher in fat (16 grams in 2 Tbsp.) than some foods, but consume it in moderation. You can even reduce the fat in recipes by substituting peanut butter for butter.

Fitness
Moderation is the key. If you over train by performing too many exercise sessions continuously without proper rest, you don’t give the muscles enough time to recover. Therefore you won’t reap the benefits of exercising. Physical symptoms of overtraining include: poor performances, inability to maintain training intensity, chronic fatigue, elevated resting heart rate, hormonal changes, high blood pressure, continual muscle soreness, sudden weight loss, headaches and frequent sickness."

Egg safety is important, especially since bad eggs can cause food-borne illness. Before you purchase a carton of eggs, examine them. Avoid cartons with cracked eggs. Don’t leave raw or cooked eggs out of the refrigerator for more than two hours. Don’t eat raw eggs. Be mindful of expiration dates. When in doubt, throw them out!

Fitness
Give purpose to every workout. The more carefully you plan your weight training program, the more meaningful, exciting and effective each session will be. Although we encourage long term goals, you should have a goal in mind for each workout. It may mean going a little longer, a little faster, a little heavier on the resistance or trying a new exercise."

Want to get to know your eating habits? Use a journal to keep track of your eating patterns. Make it personal. Record the time of day you eat, what you eat and how much you eat. Also include where you were and what your hunger level was. Documenting your habits can help you to analyze your behaviors and provide solutions to help you better achieve your goals.

Fitness
Enjoy exercising with asthma. The benefits of exercise to an asthmatic above and beyond the common benefits are increased functional capacity, decreased fear of experiencing asthma symptoms and improved self-image. Exercise can be the best thing for the health of an asthmatic especially when one exercises in a warm humid environment to reduce the chances of an attack."

Don’t judge a book by its cover. When choosing a nutrition book, look past the cover. Make sure the author is credentialed and has education in the nutrition field. Read reviews about the book by other health professionals. Skim through the pages -- if the book promises results, look for another one. There are no guarantees with nutrition and health. Don’t fall for empty promises!

Fitness
Don’t hesitate to consult your doctor. If you have a minor illness, but your instinct is telling you to take a rest from exercise, listen to your intuition and check with your physician if you are seriously concerned. Better safe than sorry."

Cataracts are the world’s most common cause of blindness. In recent studies, nutrition has been looked at as a preventative measure. Antioxidant compounds like vitamin E, C and beta-carotene have been linked to delaying cataract formation. The studies are still in the preliminary phase, but it appears eating fruits and vegetables can’t hurt!

Fitness
Reduce your risk of diabetes. Adult onset diabetes is a growing problem for women and men. Research indicates that weight training can increase glucose utilization in the body by 23 percent in four months. Exercise acts like insulin in regulating the blood sugars in the body and is the best thing for the health of a diabetic.

Whistler is not only a place for hard core skiing or hiking in the mountains, it is now being built on a much more solid base of events and attractions that could quickly add up to a world-class destination resort far beyond the dog eared pages of Powder magazine…. What I am talking about is the pieces of the puzzle that are now coming together to give Whistler a slightly more nouveau backdrop. They include such spectacular events as the Telus ski and Snowboard Festival as well as Cornucopia and now more recently Whistler Wellness week. Let’s put Whistler on the map in a way that will leave it second to nothing!!!!!

Beginning on the 28th of April until May 6th there is a veritable plethora of events and wellness symposiums that will not only give you food for thought but also possibly make you think about the food you thought was good and what food maybe could do with some improvement.(kids, it’s time to relinquish your hold on the Tim Tam packet and instead reach for the juicy freshness of an organic kiwi or banana…..Ahhhh, you can just taste the difference, so much more to organic food than just pulp and water.)

But, I must stress (that’s why I am attending the event as well!!) that this is simply the beginning (the food you are eating I mean!!) there is every possible type of event, listing and seminar on every aspect of mind, body and spirit. There are also some fabulous specials not to be missed.(read Locals deals!)

I always believe that if you can improve your life by even 1% why wouldn’t you??? But, with the wellness week everyone has so much opportunity to improve the quality of their life that even just the mention of 1% improvement simply pales in comparison to the actual improvement you could achieve in your life. There are also activities that you may not be familiar with , such as Nordic walking. Now one would imagine, that living in Whistler’s cool mountain top area that we are always Nordic walking right??? Well, apparently not! Nordic walking offers one the opportunity to get a full body work-out in a very low impact manner. For more information contact Jo Younker through Meadow Park, she will also be giving demonstrations throughout Whistler Wellness week.

Now, if this is not enough of a tease to entice you to attend then, I will be personally handing out Tim Tams in the Village Square at 5:30am on the 6th of May in my easter Bunny outfit!! (just kidding o.k!)

Milk is a great source of calcium and protein. You can enjoy it even if you’re lactose intolerant! Opt for lactose-free milk or soy milk. Since whole milk is high in fat, choose nonfat or 1% fat. You can also get your calcium from dark green leafy vegetables, beans, soy products or calcium fortified juice and cereal.

Fitness
Exercise to keep your immunity strong. Researchers have found a link between regular exercise and improved immune function response. Experts William Primos and James Wappes note that during moderate exercise immune cells circulate more quickly through your body and are better at destroying viruses and bacteria.

Are your iron levels low? Include foods rich in iron. The most absorbable sources of iron come from animal proteins like red meat, poultry, fish and liver. Many breads and cereals are also enriched with iron. Whenever you consume an iron rich food, include a source of vitamin C. This will help to increase the absorption of iron. For example, have a side salad with peppers and a chicken sandwich.

Fat free doesn’t mean calorie free! Eating fat-free foods may help cut down the fat in your diet but will not cut out the calories. Although fat-free products do not have the fat, they still have plenty of sugar (often more) and calories. Since fat gives you a feeling of fullness (satiety), foods that are low in fat may not satisfy your hunger.

Fitness
Try a trainer. Those who work out with a trainer accomplish twice the results of someone exercising on their own. This was proven in the areas of body fat reduction, increasing strength and boosting metabolism. A qualified trainer can help you set realistic goals and determine safe strategies, all while providing the encouragement you need. Try a virtual trainer out at eDiets.com or for a certified trainer in your area contact www.ACEFitness.org.

Make your goals specific and reasonable. Reach for the stars but make sure your goals are achievable. Start with baby steps. Change your goal from, “I will eat healthier” to “I will eat at least 3 servings of vegetables each day.” Revisit your goals often to assess your progress. Remember, small steps add up quickly -- you’ll reach your goal before you know it!

Cravings are usually more psychological than physical. You can avoid cravings by eating small, frequent meals. When you get hungry between meals, enjoy a healthy snack. Another tip is to drink water instead of searching for a snack. Oftentimes, we confuse thirst with hunger. By not giving into cravings, you’ll be amazed at the amount of empty calories you save.

Fitness
Rubberized workouts: Fitness bands can provide a challenging total body workout. To ensure your safety when using bands, check tubing regularly for tears, worn spots or holes and replace as necessary. Always wear supportive sneakers when using tubing. Be sure the tubing is securely anchored underfoot or on a door before each exercise. Finally, stay away from surfaces that are abrasive (i.e. concrete) that can tear tubing. Carpeting, wood floors or grass are best.

Compare costs for vitamin and mineral supplements. No-frills generic brands are often manufactured by the same companies that make the heavily advertised (and costly) brands. Read the labels and compare ingredients.

Fitness
Be prepared. You never know when the opportunity will arise to get in some physical activity. Always have your sneakers close by so you can take advantage of unplanned breaks in your day. Keep your gym bag handy and packed with the essentials including, sneakers, a water bottle and sun screen.

Every day is a new day. If tough times send you reeling for the refrigerator, find other ways to deal with your problems. Try to cope with negative emotions in positive ways. Write in your journal, read, take a warm, relaxing bath, call a friend, walk the dog, play with the cat… whatever de-stressor works for you! The trick is to not “feed” into negativity.

Fitness
Don’t exercise with a fever. Fever (a body temperature above 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) signifies you are doing battle with a virus. When you exercise under these conditions it increases your risk of dehydration, heatstroke, and even heart failure. Wait for your fever to subside prior to resuming moderate physical activity.

Reduce your sodium intake! Rinse and drain all canned vegetables, beans, and legumes before eating. Put the saltshaker away and use fresh or dried herbs and sodium-free spices! Try combining: 2 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. basil 1 tsp. oregano 1 tsp. anise 1 tsp. powdered lemon rind or dried lemon

Fitness
Avoid the 3 P’s, pills, powders, and potions! There is no magic bullet for weight loss and health. If it sounds too good to be true it is. Your money would be much better spent on a personal trainer or a virtual one like those available on eDiets.com.

Garlic anyone? It may keep your friends away, but it is healthy for you! Garlic can protect you from infection, detoxify your body, strengthen blood vessels and lower your blood pressure. It also contains a clot-preventing agent. The bulbs of garlic contain a natural antibiotic and antifungal agent. Use garlic in your recipes. It is a great way to add healthy flavor!

When choosing a health club, pay attention to the small details as you tour a facility. Notice the cleanliness, volume of music, friendliness of the staff, how crowded, the demographics of the members and the programs they offer. Ultimately, the club should be a place you would enjoy spending time in. It should have programs that meet your preferences and staff that will be attentive to your needs.

Do you lose energy by the middle of the afternoon each day? Your blood sugar levels drop about 4 hours after lunch, hence the lack of energy. Skip the candy bar or coffee. Instead have a healthy snack containing protein, carbohydrate and fat. Try yogurt topped with your favorite crunchy cereal, crackers topped with low-fat cheese or a slice of whole grain bread with peanut butter.

Press Release - Whistler Valley Trail Run

For Immediate Release

Grab Your family and Run!

Event organizers team up so families can play together

Tuesday, April 11th (Whistler, BC) – Organizers of the Whistler Valley Trail Run and the Whistler Triathlon Club have teamed up to host two days of family fun and fitness on May 27th and May 28th. Unofficially dubbed as “Family Race Weekend in Whistler” the Tri Club’s 2nd Annual Kids of Steel Race will kick off the weekend on the Saturday. On Sunday morning runners of all ages (with or without family in tow) will hit the paths for the 15th Annual Whistler Valley Trail Run.  The two events will cap off Family Week in our community from May 22nd – 28th.

Following last year’s Kids of Steel (KOS) race a brainstorming session was held to discuss what could happen “the next time to improve the triathlon. As thoughts and comments flew around, an idea was proposed to create a fun, participation weekend for families that tied together KOS and the Whistler Valley Trail Run. The idea made sense, especially since there is a movement in Whistler to promote family happenings as well as health, wellness and fitness initiatives that bring our community together and visitors to the resort. A handful of discussions later and the rest is history in the making.

The 2nd Annual Kids of Steel (KOS) race features age groupings from 8 – 16+ years old and will be held at the Meadow Park Sports Centre. According to KOS Race Director Marie-Anne Prevost, there are few kids’ events on the yearly triathlon calendar so the Whistler Tri Club’s race is important for developing participation in sport. "Last year's race was a tremendous success even though it was a bit chilly (in October)!”, comments Prevost, “We are looking forward to another great turn out of kids (55 at the inaugural race) and volunteers as well as a fun and safe event for the community."

The 15th Annual Whistler Valley Trail Run (WVTR) has something old and something new this year for everyone. Back are the 5km & 10km routes for walkers, runners and baby joggers; the Teddy Bear Trot (kids 10 and under) sponsored by the Mountain Adventure Centre; and for the second year the Kids Drop Zone (pre-registered childminding for toilet trained 3 – 8 year olds) hosted by the Westin Resort & Spa, RMOW and Dynamic Core Fitness. New additions include online registration, reduced entry fees, accommodation packages for out-of-town participants, a new charity for race proceeds (the Community Foundation of Whistler) and a special Family Rate (mom and/or dad plus children) so the whole clan can walk or run together.

To learn more about both events and to register online or download mail-in entry forms visit their websites at www.whistlertriclub.ca and www.whisltervalleytrailrun.org.

Volunteers are needed for the race weekend so if you would like to be a part of the action do check out the volunteer information sections on both websites (Psst! Volunteer efforts will be thanked with a combined party at the Westin Resort & Spa on Sunday, May 28th).

KOS would like to thank their sponsors: RDC Fine Homes, RMOW, The Westin Resort & Spa, The Body Shop, Whistler Real Estate Company and Pique Newsmagazine

WVTR would also like thank the following businesses & individuals for their support: RMOW, Mountain Adventure Centre, Eyedeas, Road Sign ID, S2S Marketing, Stoney Creek Resort Property Management, Westin Resort & Spa and Dynamic Core Fitness.

Brazillian odyssey???

For those of you who are a little squeamish or a little on the “I didn’t need to know that” side of things…” maybe this one is not for you!!! Please continue drinking your lattes in the sun while reading your favorite novel…..(in fact, just ignore me!!)

Now when I think of Brazil I am thinking of Rio de Janiero and beaches and hot, hot , hot sunny days. I am not thinking of a defluffing or denuding or mowing the lawn so to speak….. So, where have all the crazy ideas of Brazilian waxing come from??

It seems to be that it started with models and the like. But it really came to the U.S via New York and 7 sisters. They thought it to be “cleaner, neater and more sexy..”
Now, the definition of a Brazilian wax changes depending on where you are and who you are talking to, but basically it is a basement spring clean where they rip everything off from the front, the back and everything in between. You are left with a little runway (similar to the Pemberton Airstrip!!), just enough for a plane or two to land
but no need to use a whipper snipper. Usually, clients want to try it because their girlfriends have done it.

I remember being in my early 20’s and going to get a full leg and bikini wax. When I arrived, the girl asked me if I wanted the “usual”. I said, that would be fine. I lay on the table and noticed that either the table was really short or I was really tall. My legs were hanging off by a couple of feet. Later, the girl asked me if I was a model… I was sooooooooo flattered and thought that maybe she needed glasses as I was never one of those waif-thin girls that have to run around in the shower just to get wet!!! Anyway, she began the waxing and I noticed how painless it was. I was delighted and surprised all at once!! In fact, it was so painless that I did not realize just how much of the lawn was mown…..later, I felt a little sheepish and was glad that summer was on the way. The moral to the story is…………never assume that you know what the “usual” is!!!
(Also, point to remember to self…….thank god there is just a week between a bad haircut and a good one.)
